“As a student, whenever other kids called me ugly names (including the R-word) on the playground, it hurt. And during those lonely times I comforted myself by saying: \u201cthey\u2019re wrong. I\u2019m smart.\u201d I repeated that to myself, over and over and over again, to tell myself that I\u2019m worth something. That I\u2019m a person. Little knowing that my way of defending my own dignity was sacrificing someone else. So, if I was worth something because I was \u201csmart\u201d, what did that mean about people weren\u2019t \u201csmart\u201d? It would be saying that someone else isn\u2019t human\u2014and isn\u2019t worthy of being treated like a person.”<\/p>\n
